Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte expressed his rejection of the two memoranda of understanding signed by the Libyan National Accord government and the Turkish government, while the Prime Minister of the Accord Government, Faiz al-Sarraj, met with the Turkish foreign and defense ministers in the Qatari capital, Doha.

Conte said in a statement quoted by Sputnik that the two agreements are unacceptable to Italy, and that he would discuss their details later with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Both the Libyan National Accord government and the Turkish government signed on November 27 in Istanbul, in the presence of Turkish President Erdogan and the head of the Accord Government, al-Sarraj, two notes, the first of which stipulates the delineation of areas of maritime influence between the two parties, while the second requires strengthening security cooperation between them.

The maritime agreement between the two parties sparked strong criticisms from Greece, Egypt and Cyprus, which issued a joint statement in which they considered that the signing of this memorandum of understanding was a measure that had "no legal effect".

On December 6, Greece expelled the Libyan ambassador in an expression of its anger at an agreement concluded by Libya and Turkey to demarcate the maritime borders between them near Crete, a day after Greece considered that the agreement - signed last week between Turkey and Libya to divide the spheres of influence and interests In the Mediterranean between them - a violation of international maritime law.

Athens represents the view that Turkey and Libya violate this agreement the Greek continental shelf south of Crete.

On the other hand, Ankara believes that Crete does not have a continental shelf behind its territorial waters.
