Niamey, the Nigerian capital, is hosting an extraordinary summit of G5 Sahel leaders on December 15, after the deadly offensive launched by jihadists against a Nigerien army base in Inates in the west of the country that claimed the lives of more than 70 Nigerien soldiers.

The extraordinary summit has just started this December 15 at the Palais des Congrès in Niamey. It started behind closed doors around an agenda that remained confidential after the postponement of the one that French President Emmanuel Macron had planned in Pau, France. Around his president-host, Mahamadou Issouffou, are gathered his Malian, Chadian, Burkinabè and Mauritanian counterparts.

Nothing has filtered on the subjects to be discussed by the five heads of state. There will undoubtedly be a question of security and the fight against terrorism. The shock is still great in Niamey after the attack by Inates on the Malian border which left 71 victims among Nigerien soldiers.

Deadly semester

" It is always painful to see the death toll in all G5 countries in this fight against terrorism, said Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, President of Burkina Faso, after having bowed to their graves. We must work to ensure that victories are certain over terrorism. In the short, medium and long term. It is also obvious that in this fight, while working ourselves from our armed forces, as in all countries of the world, you have seen that the fight against terrorism needs allies and this alliance that we must to have must be done in all responsibility, in all good cooperation, with all respect for each other ”.

We must work to ensure that victories are certain over terrorism.

The last six months have been the deadliest for the Sahel since 2012. The Malians have lost more than 140 soldiers and the Burkinabes more than forty. The emotion was therefore great this morning when the heads of state went to the Carré des Martyrs in Niamey for a tribute to the soldiers who fell in Inates.

The soldiers are buried in the air base of the national squadron. The tombs of this Martyrs Square are still covered with fresh earth and simple metal plaques indicate the names of the deceased. But ultimately a monument should pay tribute to this place to these soldiers who fell in combat. This morning, a large sign was installed on which one can read: " Rest in peace, worthy and valiant sons of the country, the Fatherland will be eternally grateful to you ".
