Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister of the Libyan National Accord, Fayez al-Sarraj, received the second time in three weeks.

The two parties discussed the executive program of the memoranda of understanding between Libya and Turkey and the mechanisms of activating them with regard to security cooperation, and defining areas of maritime competence in the Mediterranean.

They also discussed developments in Libya. President Erdogan reiterated his country's position rejecting the attack on Tripoli, and said that he was keen to restore stability to Libya.

On the other hand, a statement issued by Al-Sarraj's media office said that the meeting dealt with developments in Libya and the prospects for security and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The statement drew attention to Erdogan's praise of the sacrifices of the Libyan people in defense of the capital and the civil state.

President Erdogan said in a television interview today, Sunday, that the memorandum of understanding concluded by Turkey with Libya on maritime jurisdiction "changed the status imposed by the Treaty of Sevres (in 1920)."

Erdogan pointed out that the agreements concluded between the two countries were carried out according to international law, stressing that Turkey and Libya have rights in the eastern Mediterranean region.

He pointed out that the memorandum of understanding related to security and military cooperation with Libya will enter into force upon approval by the Turkish parliament.

He added that Turkey is ready to provide any military support that Libya needs, after Ankara and the internationally recognized government in Tripoli signed a security agreement.

"We will protect the rights of Libya and Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean ... We are fully prepared to provide any necessary support to Libya," Erdogan told the Turkish television channel Al-Khobar.

He added after a meeting with Al-Sarraj that the retired Major General Khalifa Haftar, who leads forces in eastern Libya, was "an illegitimate leader ... and he represents an illegal structure."

On November 27, Erdogan and Sarraj signed two memoranda of understanding related to security and military cooperation, and the definition of maritime jurisdiction, with the aim of protecting the rights of the two countries deriving from international law.

The Turkish Parliament approved the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the delineation of maritime jurisdiction on December 5, while the official newspaper of the Turkish state published the memorandum in its issue issued on the 7th of the same month.

Turkey took another step towards providing military support to the Libyan National Accord government yesterday, Saturday, when a bilateral agreement, including providing it with a rapid response force, was submitted to Parliament.
