"The most striking thing is that there is clear age discrimination in all professions," says Magnus Carlsson, associate professor of economics at Linnaeus University.

Together with Stefan Eriksson at Uppsala University, he has done the study, which is based on 6,000 fictitious job applications sent to employers in seven different occupations:

Administrative assistants, shop salesmen, vehicle drivers, company salesmen, chefs, cleaning staff and restaurant assistants.

Negligible

- We were surprised that the negative age effect starts already at the age of 40, says Magnus Carlsson.

At 65, the chance of being contacted after applying for a job is slim. According to the researchers, only two to three percent. At the same time, it is believed that many elderly people have good contact networks that can be used to get a new job.
