The dog must have entered an animal hospital on December 4 with seizures and cramps. According to a note from the county administrative board, the dog must have been "wooded". According to Region Östergötland's infection prevention physician, 11 people should have been exposed to suspected infection.

- From our point of view, this is what we fear and fear. That it is a matter of time before we have rabies, when it comes to dogs that lack paper and where we do not know if they are vaccinated, says Pernilla Stridh, county veterinarian Länsstyrelsen Östergötland.

Six people cut and torn

Three people must have been bitten, three people torn and others must have been exposed to blood splashes and saliva. All of them sought emergency care for vaccination.

Missing passport and paper

Late in the evening, the day after the dog entered the animal hospital, however, the county administrative board received information that the dog that lacked a passport and paper was not rabies infected. However, the handling of the case was inadequate and should now be investigated.

- There was a lot that went wrong. I'm just thinking about the time delay. The officials who were in readiness would have acted earlier. The alarm about the suspicion came in the evening, I do not know exactly what time the dog came to the animal hospital. But the dog was sacrificed in the evening, but we will investigate the trips now, says county veterinarian Pernilla Stridh.

Calls for government cooperation

The County Administrative Board in Östergötland has called for government cooperation. These include Region Östergötland, the National Veterinary Institute, the Swedish National Board of Agriculture, the Swedish Work Environment Authority and the Public Health Authority.

"It turned out that veterinary staff was not vaccinated against rabies," says Pernilla Stridh.
