On Friday, the team of elite soldiers rescued six dead from White Island. The bodies were transported by one of the navy's vessels to New Zealand's mainland for identification.

At the same time, doctors are working to save those who have survived and suffered severe burns. Volcano experts have said that the volcano may have new eruptions.

"Today was all about bringing the bodies home to their loved ones," New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said at a press conference on Friday in the town of Whakatane on the mainland where relatives and others had gathered to pray and sing together.

Police said teams of divers have searched for two bodies in the waters around the volcano island. The divers have so far not found the bodies and will continue to search on Saturday.

"It's not over yet," New Zealand Police Chief Mike Bush said, according to Reuters.
