At least 25 people were injured in an explosion in the city of Blankenburg, in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, Friday morning, German media reported.

A police spokesman said that it was not excluded that there were no more wounded, adding that the police forces and firefighters were present at the scene of the accident, and that the apartment building where the explosion took place was being evacuated.

It is not yet clear what caused the explosion, which occurred in one of the city's apartment buildings. The spokesman did not provide data on the degree of injuries.

The residential area where the blast occurred contained a nursery and a primary school.

The nursery reported that about a hundred children were moved to other places.
