12 December 2019With the green light also from the Senate, the United States Congress recognized the Armenian genocide by the Ottoman Empire during the First World War.

A move destined to unleash the anger of Ankara that had already called the American ambassador after approval by the House last October .

"It is appropriate for the Senate to be on the right side of history ... the truth about the Armenian genocide is recognized," said Senator Bob Menendez, who asked for approval of the resolution, which was passed unanimously.

Even in the House the consensus was practically total, with 405 votes in favor and 11 against.

Under pressure from the White House, 3 Gop senators had initially opposed the measure, claiming it would undermine relations with Turkey, already undermined by Ankara's purchase of the Russian missile system.
