The reason for the new rules is to prevent the spread of cancer plague that the invasive signal cancer carries, which means that it can eliminate especially the cancer. Due to the EU common rules, the rules need to be tightened for fishing in, for example, Vättern.

- Only two percent of river cancer stocks remain in Sweden. It is therefore important that the measures we take are effective. The new EU rules make it clear that we are tightening the regulations to continue to fish the signal, says Sofia Brockmark investigator at the Marine and Water Authority in a press release.

60 crayfish at most

One of the new rules that is introduced is a catch restriction, which means that each fisherman can take up to a maximum of 60 crayfish per day. The weekends for allowed fish will also decrease, from five to three weekends and the crayfish must be at least ten centimeters in order to reduce the risk of illegal exposure of small signal crayfish.
