It is said that it would cost 110 billion won to clean up the four bases we got back today (11th). The government is thinking that we will pay the money first and then change the rules that we have now to share the US later.

The cost of clean-up at the four US bases returned today is about $ 114 billion.

In addition to oil and heavy metal contamination, the camp market, which detects even the toxic substance dioxin, costs 74.4 billion won, 74% of the total cost.

The government plans to pay for the cleanup, which is expected to take about two years, and then change the couch, the USFK status agreement, to share the United States.

The United States, however, has no obligations to recover or recover bases on its current four trillion sofas, and that pollution levels fall short of the “real and imminent risks” set forth in its guidelines.

The US has not paid for the cleanup of USFK bases already returned, as well as other allied bases such as Japan.

[Jang Jeong-gu / Incheon Green Association Policy Chairman: We didn't say 'US will take responsibility'. I think we can continue to take responsibility for the pollution and provide a chance for the Korean government to take it.]

Aware that the government has made a big concession to the United States, some say the cleanup costs should be used as our card for defense-sharing negotiations.

[Shin Beom-cheol / Director, Security and Unification Center, Asan Institute for Policy Studies: As the amount of environmental healing increases, the total amount increases, which can reduce other unnecessary parts.]

The government says the decision to return the US military base has nothing to do with negotiating contributions, but observes that it would have rushed to negotiate a return to highlight our contribution.
