According to Alfred Nobel's wish, the physics prize should be awarded first. This year's winners are James Peebles, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz.

Peebles gets half the price for "theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology" and Mayor and Queloz are rewarded for "the discovery of an exoplanet in orbit around a sun-like star".

They shared the chemistry prize

The chemistry prize goes to three researchers for the development of the lithium-ion battery, which operates mobile phones, electric cars and enables renewable energy sources.

The award winners are John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino.

Their discoveries have led to a significant change in our society, says Professor Mats Larsson, who presents the award winners and their discoveries.

John B Goodenough received his award sitting in a wheelchair.

Unique literature double

The Nobel Prize in medicine (or physiology) is shared between William G Kaelin, Peter J Ratcliffe and Gregg L Semenza "for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen supply".

This year there was a unique distribution of two literature awards. Last year's ceremony was canceled after all the turmoil around the Swedish Academy. But now she received the 2018 Literature Prize, the Polish author Olga Tokarczuk.

Polish literature shines on Europe. Several Nobel laureates and now a world-class poet, said academy member Per Wästberg in his presentation speech.

Several boycotted

Olga Tokarczuk's prize is controversial in Poland. Even more so is 2019 literary award winner Peter Handke in several other countries.

The ambassadors of Turkey, Albania and Kosovo boycotted the Nobel ceremony because of Peter Gloske's support for Serbia's former president Slobodan Milosevic, who was charged with, among other things, genocide and war crimes in former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Finally, it was time for the Nobel Prize in Economics, or Sweden's Riksbank Prize in Economic Science to Alfred Nobel's memory as the official name reads. The recipients are Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo - who are a married couple - as well as Michael Kremer "for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty".

Proud relatives

The live broadcast ceremony in Stockholm is followed by countless people around the world. There are 1,560 people in the Concert Hall.

The King and Crown Princess couples have their places on the stage.

At the front of the audience are representatives from the government and parliament. A little further on the back of the first parquet are the award-winning families, and there, as always, tears of joy and pride appeared.

Pikar climate denier

In his introductory speech, Carl-Henrik Heldin, chairman of the board of the Nobel Foundation, made a clear mark on those who do not want to make the scientifically well-founded conclusions about man's negative impact on the climate. He also talked about the importance of defending scientific freedom.

The splendor of flowers on and around the stage is traditionally donated from the Italian city of San Remo where Alfred Nobel lived his last years.

Earlier in the day, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in Oslo.
