Twenty evacuated

One person is confirmed dead and the death rate is expected to rise.

Nearly 50 people were on the island or nearby when the volcano erupted on Monday at 2pm local time, the New Zealand Herald newspaper said. At a press conference, police say 23 people had been taken from the island.

According to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, there is no information on injured or dead Swedes.
