Kobane is a special place for the Kurds. The city has become a symbol of the fight against IS. The victory over the terrorist group here paved the way for a growing self-government, with protection from American troops.

But after the United States has now withdrawn forces from northern Syria, the future of Kurdish self-government is increasingly unclear, and the map is being redrawn.

It was two months ago that Turkey launched an offensive in the Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Syria, and hundreds of Kurds were killed and more than one hundred thousand Kurds forced to flee their homes.
