The Democratic-dominated US House of Representatives has passed a resolution supporting a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which is opposed to any peace plan proposed by President Donald Trump's administration that does not explicitly call for an independent Palestinian state living side by side with Israel.

Only five of the 256 lawmakers, most of them Democrats, supported the decision.

The Hill website reported that the decision comes after the Democrats criticized a number of the Trump administration's moves, which they saw endangering the two-state solution, including moving the United States embassy to occupied Jerusalem, recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, and cutting most American aid to the Palestinians.

The resolution affirmed that Washington should "deter actions that would drive the most peaceful end to the conflict, especially every unilateral annexation of territories, or every effort to establish a Palestinian state outside the framework of negotiations with Israel."

The resolution reminded of the support that "Democratic and Republican Presidents" provided during the "twenty years" for the solution that aspires to establish a Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel, and their rejection of "expanding settlements" as well.

This decision is a warning to the American President who, since his arrival in the White House, has unilaterally adopted unilateral decisions that are favorable to Israel, in a break with the American diplomatic tradition and with the international consensus.
