14.32 At Auschwitz for the first time as head of the German government, Chancellor Merkel said that the memory of Nazi crimes is "inseparable" from German identity. The visit to the camp in Poland arrives on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the camp: between Auschwitz and Birkenau, it is estimated that over 1 million victims of the Nazi regime, most of them Jews. "I bow to the suffering of these people. We must never forget," Merkel concluded. "No tolerance on anti-Semitism."
