• Treatment Board: Brieva prison approves that Urdangarin enjoys four days of leave at Christmas and not the seven he asked for
  • Justice: Inaki Urdangarin asks for his first exit permit

Infanta Cristina's husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, wants to expand his volunteer work with the disabled. As EL MUNDO has learned, the former Duke of Palma has requested that he be allowed to leave prison three times a week - instead of two - to go one more day as a volunteer to the NGO Hogar Don Orione , located in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) .

The brother-in-law of Felipe VI this week sent the petition to the address of the prison of Brieva (Ávila) although said request must now be approved by the holder of the Penitentiary Surveillance Court Number 1 of Castilla y León , who already granted him in September leave two days a week, eight hours each time, to go to the aforementioned center dedicated to the care of disabled people. The judge agreed to allow these prison trips to Urdangarin despite the criteria against the Prosecutor's Office, who defended that the permits were precipitated by not meeting the legal "requirements" to grant them.

However, since September 19, Felipe VI's brother-in-law travels punctually twice a week to the headquarters of Hogar Don Orione, in the northwest of the Community of Madrid. The prison surveillance judge considered that these prison outings were necessary to avoid the "desocialization" of the husband of Infanta Cristina. The togado argued his decision based on article 117 of the Penitentiary Regime on "regimental measures for the execution of specialized programs for second-degree convicts." The Provincial Court of Ávila endorsed prison leave permits.

Christmas permit

On the other hand, the Board of Treatment of the jail in Abul reported on Thursday in favor that Iñaki Urdangarin enjoys during the four-day Christmas holidays - and not the seven requested by the prisoner - on his first ordinary penitentiary permit. Juan Carlos I's son-in-law, sentenced to five years and ten months in jail for the Nóos case , has already served a quarter of the sentence and, as established by the penitentiary regulations, can already request an exit permit.

However, the Penitentiary Surveillance judge also now has to ratify this favorable response from the penitentiary by previously obtaining the Public Ministry's report. He has the last word to decide where the former Duke of Palma will spend Christmas.

The ordinary permits of the prisoners are regulated in article 154 of the Penitentiary Regime where it is held that they can be granted "after a mandatory report from the Technical Team" and with a duration of "up to seven days in preparation for life in freedom".

Like the rest of prisoners classified in second grade, Urdangarin can request ordinary permits to leave the prison with a maximum of 36 days a year -18 days per semester-, although without being able to add more than one week in a row.
