• Poland.Angela Merkel will visit Auschwitz concentration camp for the first time

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived on Friday at the former Nazi death camp in Auschwitz, on her first visit to this Holocaust symbol in the 14 years she has been leading the Government, according to the Afp agency.

His visit is also the first of a German chancellor since 1995 and coincides with a rise of anti-Semitism and the extreme right in Germany.

The chancellor has crossed the entrance portal chaired by the sinister currency 'Arbeit macht frei' ("Work will set you free"), accompanied by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, and by a survivor of the extermination camp, Stanislaw Bartnikowski, 87 years, in addition to other representatives of the Jewish community.

On the eve of this displacement, Merkel announced the donation of 60 million euros to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation , for the maintenance of the place where more than 1 million people were killed, mostly Jews, between 1940 and 1945. The largest Some of them were killed upon arrival at the concentration camp, now located in Poland.

The German conservative leader will give a speech at noon in Auschwitz and will complete a minute of silence before the so-called Wall of Death , where thousands of detainees were shot. Next, he will travel to Birkenau, three kilometers away, to see the place where the deportees who arrived by train were "selected": the youngest, the oldest and the most fragile were immediately sent to die.
