US President Donald Trump on Wednesday lamented "the hypocrisy" of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after his teasing by a camera at NATO's 70th anniversary summit and canceled his press conference. "He's hypocritical, he's a good guy ... but that's the way it is," he said during a press briefing during his meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the working session of NATO's 70th Anniversary Summit in Watford (UK), near London.

Trudeau, Trump and Macron surprised by cameras as they seemed to be laughing at Trump

Donald Trump said he had scolded the Canadian Prime Minister during their interview: "I told him he did not pay the 2% of his GDP promised for military spending and I'm sure he was not happy" . He added "thinking about leaving again" without speaking in front of the press, saying he "gave enough press conferences". What he confirmed shortly thereafter at a working luncheon gathering NATO member countries having fulfilled their financial obligations to the Alliance: "I will cancel the press conference", a- he said.

The French, British, Canadian and Dutch leaders were surprised by the cameras as they seemed to be making fun of Donald Trump at the reception given at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday night. Images shot by British cameras and subtitled by the Canadian channel CBC show Emmanuel Macron, Boris Johnson, Justin Trudeau and Mark Rutte to chat with Princess Anne, obviously amused. The British Prime Minister asks Mr Macron: "That's why you're late?" And Justin Trudeau adds, "He's late because he had an unexpected 40-minute press conference."

Inaudible in the exchange, Emmanuel Macron had met in the afternoon Donald Trump, who had attacked hard on his words about NATO and its willingness to tax US technology companies. The two leaders had long answered questions from journalists and Emmanuel Macron had said "maintain" his words about NATO in "brain death", considered "insulting" by Donald Trump. "Oh, yes, yes, he announced ...." continued Justin Trudeau with a smile. "We could see his team falling from the clouds".

Complex relations between Trudeau and Trump

As at the last NATO summit, Donald Trump ignored the protocol and used his public appearances with Allied leaders to answer questions from international media. His relationship with Justin Trudeau is complex. The Canadian Prime Minister had upset the US president at the G7 summit in June 2018 in La Malbaie (Canada).

A few hours after Justin Trudeau's press conference in which he found the US decision to impose taxes on Canada's steel and aluminum imports "insulting", Donald Trump, a stinged, tweeted from his Air Force One aircraft he had ordered his representatives to remove the US seal from the final release. He had treated Justin Trudeau as "dishonest and weak".
