Deported to Malta after the latest developments in the investigation into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, several MEPs expressed skepticism. They said they were "worried about the integrity of the murder investigation" as long as Prime Minister Joseph Muscat remains in office.

"We are very concerned about what we have seen or heard in the last two days," Liberal MEP Sophie In't Veld said on Wednesday.

"As long as he is in power, there is no trust"

A mission of seven MEPs spent two days in Valletta, to see more clearly about the investigation into the assassination in 2017 of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was investigating corruption in Malta.

This case, in which the names of senior officials of the Maltese state (a minister and the chief of staff of the Prime Minister) are cited, has swayed the power to push him to announce that he would resign January 12th.

Demonstrations have multiplied in recent weeks in Malta, especially at the initiative of NGOs who constantly demand the immediate departure of Joseph Muscat and "justice for Daphne".

"The next 40 days will be crucial to the murder investigation and we do not want to risk or even perceive any risk that the investigation will be compromised of any kind," said Sophie In't. Veld. "There must be absolute confidence in the process and I think that as long as [Joseph Muscat] is in power, there is no confidence," added the Dutch.

Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed in the explosion of her car bomb on October 16, 2017. Joseph Muscat is accused by the family of Daphne Caruana, the opposition and civic movements of intervening to protect his chief of staff Keith Schembri, implicated in the case. All are clamoring for his immediate departure.

Keith Schembri, named as the real sponsor of the murder of Daphne Caruana by a businessman accused in the case, whose name appeared in the journalist's investigations, resigned last week. Heard by the investigators, he was released on Thursday, triggering the anger of the Caruana Galizia family who argued that "at least two witnesses and multiple clues implicated Schembri in the assassination."
