• United Kingdom: Money of Russian oligarchs in the 'tories' campaign

Donald Trump has broken into the British elections amid a calculated attempt by Premier Boris Johnson to mark distances. The US president arrived at Stansted airport on Monday night, accompanied by his wife Melania, on his third visit to the United Kingdom, to attend this time the summit of the 70th anniversary of NATO that is being celebrated in Watford.

His previous visit, in the month of June, occurred in the last days of the Government of Theresa May and in full race for the conservative leadership. Already then, Johnson preferred not to look face to face and maintain only a telephone contact with Trump, who did personally receive the leader of the Brexit Party Nigel Farage.

Trump even suggested that Johnson seal an electoral alliance with Farage and predicted that they would make "a formidable team together." The unpredictability of the American president has conservative strategists in a state of maximum anxiety, who have seen how the safety distance of ten points that Boris Johnson maintained over the Labor Jeremy Corbyn in the elections of December 12 has been reduced in recent days (43% to 34% according to the latest YouGov survey).

Corbyn will take advantage of Trump's visit to reactivate one of the key points of his campaign: the alleged "sale" of British public health (NHS) to US corporations.

The American ambassador, Woody Wilson, was the first to suggest that the NHS would be on the negotiating table in a hypothetical trade agreement with Washington. All attempts by Boris Johnson, and Trump himself, to deny that the NHS would be in the negotiations have proved fruitless.

Johnson, harshly criticized for taking advantage of the attack on the London Bridge, will receive Trump on Downing Street on Tuesday, along with the leaders attending the NATO summit, which will also be entertained at night by Queen Elizabeth II at the Buckingham Palace. Johnson and Trump are initially planning a bilateral meeting on Wednesday, as part of the Watford summit.
