The Minister of Education notes that the improved results have been achieved despite the fact that the Swedish school has received a record number of newly arrived students, wrestled with a great teacher shortage and has received larger pupils.

- This is a message of strength, Swedish schools are strong, she says.

But everything is not positive. The Minister of Education states that she is concerned about the equality and segregation in Swedish schools.

Compared to other OECD countries, Sweden is at an average level in terms of the equivalence of the school system. But at this point, Sweden is the worst in the Nordic countries and there has been no improvement in recent years.

Several measures for equality

As measures for a more equitable school, Anna Ekström emphasizes the so-called equality grant introduced at the end of the last term, as well as the career services that will give schools in extracurricular areas better opportunities to hire and retain teachers.

She also points out that an investigation is currently underway that looks at selection, admission and establishment on the school council.

Do you want to limit the free school choice?

- We want students and parents to be able to choose which school they want to attend. At the same time, we want the rules for admission and selection to be better adapted to an equivalent school. I have to come back when the inquiry has put forward its proposal on how to do this, says Anna Ekström (S).
