by Tiziana Di Giovannandrea 02 December 2019Marcello Dell'Utri in a few hours will be a free man again, in fact he will end his sentence tomorrow after being sentenced for external competition in mafia association by the judges of Palermo.

The former Senator from Forza Italia, sentenced to 7 years for mafia crimes, will be able to leave his home in Milan. From 2018 he was under house arrest for health reasons.

After a brief escape to Lebanon, attempted on the eve of the Supreme Court ruling that finalized the sentence, he was extradited to Italy and entered prison in May 2014.

Dell'Utri was detained in a high security regime first in the Parma prison, then in the Rebibbia district office in Rome. Finally, under house arrest for health reasons.

He enjoyed the early release provided for by the law: the seven years of detention became five and a few months.

The legal proceedings of the former manager of Publitalia, however, have not yet been concluded: he is charged with the trial on the so-called 'State-mafia negotiation' which at first instance brought him the heavy sentence to 12 years in prison. The appeal is ongoing.

The charges of embezzlement, receiving and embezzlement remain in Milan and Naples, due to the disappearance of hundreds of ancient books.

After a conviction for false accounting in 1987, Dell'Utri ended up under investigation in Palermo, in the early 1990s, due to external competition in mafia association. An accusation that has dragged on for twenty years, with two appeal trials and that ended with the definitive judgment of the Cassation that has verified its relationships with the Palermo mafia from 1974 to 1992.

According to the judges, Dell'Utri, he played a 'mediator' role in relations with the mafia. Marcello Dell'Utri has always defended himself, counteracting some magistrates and harshly criticizing the accusatory system.

In a few hours Marcello Dell'Utri will be able to resume a normal life. He has two years of special surveillance decided in the sentence of conviction and the consequent obligation to sign at the law enforcement agencies.
