Americans support pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, which displeases China. On Monday, December 2, Beijing decided to suspend the stops of recovery of American warships in Hong Kong, announced the spokesman of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hua Chunying. US vessels regularly anchor in Hong Kong, as part of visits allowing sailors to "recover" in the former British colony.

This announcement follows the adoption in the United States of a law on human rights and democracy in Hong Kong. The text threatens to suspend the special economic status granted by Washington to the former British colony if the rights of the demonstrators are not respected. US President Donald Trump has also approved a measure banning the sale of anti-protest material to the Hong Kong police.

Qualified last week "of absolute abomination" by Beijing, the text of law is perceived as a form of American interference. The Chinese government will also "impose sanctions on NGOs that have behaved badly" in Hong Kong, including associations active in the field of human rights: the National Endowment for Democracy, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, International Republican Institute, Human Rights Watch and Freedom House, detailed the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, without specifying what these sanctions would consist.
