Three rescuers died in the crash of a civil security helicopter on Sunday. They were mobilized for the red alert rain-floods and storms in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes, where two people died killed by the waters. The two departments are still placed on alert by Météo France Monday.

The bad weather in the south of France intensified in the night from Sunday to Monday. They caused the deaths of two people in the Var and three members of the Civil Security near Marseille, a week after another Mediterranean episode that had already killed six people. At the end of the night, heavy rains fell gradually to Corsica, to subside during the day Monday.

Two dead in the Var

In red alert rain-flooding, the French Riviera was hit hard again Sunday. This weekend two people were washed away in the Var. In Fréjus, the owner of a pension of horses released to watch over his animals was reported missing around 9 pm Sunday. His body was found two hours later.

There was a second victim in the commune of Saint-Paul-en-Forêt. The man, a shepherd apparently left on the night Sunday night to bring back his animals, was carried away in his vehicle, a 4x4, while he tried to cross a ford. His body was found in the late evening, in his car, recessed against a tree.

The three occupants of a Civil Security helicopter who went to help residents hit by bad weather on the Côte d'Azur were found dead near Marseille in the night from Sunday to Monday. An investigation was initiated to determine the circumstances of the accident.

Monday's weather: improvement after a red vigilance in the South-East

Heavy rains in south-eastern France continued into the night from Sunday to Monday, on soils already completely saturated after the heavy rainy episodes of last week. Rainfall intensified particularly in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes to reach a cumulative of 50 to 100 mm, with locally 150 to 180 mm.

Coastal areas were the most impacted with the risk of run-off and overflow of coastal rivers. At the end of the night, the heavy rains on the South-East will gradually reduce to Corsica and then subside in the day of Monday.
