A tourist bus dropped into a ravine on Sunday (December 1st), leaving 22 dead and 21 wounded in northwestern Tunisia, according to a preliminary assessment by the authorities.

The bus, which left Tunis to get to Ain Draham, went off the road in the region of Ain es Snoussi, said the Interior Ministry. The victims are all of Tunisian nationality, for its part told the AFP the Ministry of Tourism.

Infrastructures deficient

According to the communiqué of the Ministry of the Interior published on its Facebook official page, 43 people were on board the bus that "dropped into a ravine after crossing an iron fence".

All the injured were transferred to hospitals in the area, he added.

If located near the Algerian border, the mountainous region of Ain Draham is a resort popular with Tunisians who go there at this time of year for the weekend. Many infrastructures, however, are deficient.

Road deaths in Tunisia are the highest in North Africa after Libya, with 24.40 killed per 100,000, according to the World Health Organization.
