  • Blood Thursday: At least 45 protesters die in Iraq protests

In an unusually fast session, the Iraqi Parliament has accepted this Sunday the resignation presented two days ago by Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi after two months of protests that have claimed more than 400 lives. The departure of the premier , one year after taking office, now opens a phase of uncertainty, marked by the difficulties of agreeing on a successor and forming a new Government.

"The resignation has been accepted without even voting. Parliament has officially requested the president of Iraq to look for a new candidate to preside over the Executive. No one has objected to the resignation," Kurdish deputy Sarkawt Shams told EL MUNDO, minutes later to conclude a parliamentary session that was held in Baghdad early this afternoon.
