The group has been awarded the prize for its research on reducing world poverty. Together, they have developed field studies in developing countries to better understand how to go about combating poverty.

In the world of science, award-winner Esther Duflo talks about the lack of women in the economy. She believes that the prevailing working environment may be the cause.

- It's a pretty aggressive, traditional way. Quite unpleasant. It doesn't suit everyone, especially women, she says, and continues:

- Yes, it's a bit of a macho in the economy.

Hope to inspire

Esther Duflo hopes the prize will encourage more women to start studying economics.

- Even if a woman has not received the prize, if it was only Michael (Kremer) and Abhijit (Banarjee), our subject attracts women to the economy, she says.
