According to statistics from the Swedish Agency for Social Protection and Emergency Preparedness (MSB), the rescue service is alerted to approximately 6,000 residential fires around the country each year.

- A common cause of fire in the home is cooking and soot in fireplaces. But around Christmas, of course, many fires are caused by candlelight that was left unattended, says Frida Cesar, fire engineer at the rescue service to SVT.

Check your fire alarm

The first of December is the Nordic Fire Alert Day, a day to remind everyone to check their fire protection at home. But a new study from Verisure in collaboration with Kantar Sifo shows that many children and adults in Jönköping County lack fire knowledge.

The survey shows, among other things:

  • One in ten residents in Jönköping County is not sure how to act in the event of a fire (11%)
  • Two out of five parents in Jönköping County do not believe that their children know what to do if it starts to burn (42%)
  • Two out of five parents in Jönköping County have not talked to their children about how to act if it starts to burn (39%)
