The bus, according to the authorities' information, ran through a railing on a sharp curve and performs a rock ledge.

The vehicle was then lying on the side of a river at the bottom of the ravine. The roof had worn off and the bus seats were strewn all over the ground, as the AFP broadcast reporter describes it.

Criticism of road safety in the country

All 43 people on board were Tunisians and the journey had departed from the capital Tunis, towards the tourist-tight mountain resort of Ayn Darahim. The victims were between 20 and 30 years old.

The World Health Organization WHO announced in 2015 that Tunisia has the second highest number of deaths in traffic among the countries in North Africa, where only war-ravaged Libya is worse. Criticism has been raised against the country's downhill roads, careless drivers and lack of vehicle maintenance.
