01 December 2019At least 14 people died in an attack on a Protestant church in eastern Burkina Faso, a region repeatedly targeted by Islamists this year.

The government reported it, pointing out that "unidentified armed men" attacked the religious building during Sunday mass in the town of Hantoukoura, near the border with Niger. The soldiers are hunting for those responsible, who escaped after having "14 dead and many wounded".

The attacks in Burkina Faso, which borders on Niger and Mali, began in the north but then spread to the east and west of the country in 2018; the capital itself has been hit three times. According to the UN, about 500,000 inhabitants have been forced to leave their homes due to violence.

Former French colony, two-thirds inhabited by Muslims and a third Christian, Burkina Faso has had to face intensifying attacks in the last year.
