The perpetrator of the knife attack on the London Bridge in the center of the British capital has been identified as Usman Khan. He was 28 years old and originally from the West Midlands. Sentenced to 16 years in prison for terrorism offenses in 2012, he was released on parole in December 2018.

Citizens hailed as "heroes"

On Friday, Usman Khan was attending a conference organized by Cambridge University, "Learning Together," on the rehabilitation of prisoners, in a building at the end of London Bridge. This is where he made a first victim: Jack Merrit, the course coordinator. A second person was killed and three others injured.

The assailant was then mastered on deck by ordinary citizens hailed as "heroes" in the UK. The videos posted on social networks show one of them emptying a fire extinguisher on him, while another, who would be a Polish cook working at Fishmongers' Hall, points to him a narwhal defense, probably taken in the building which contains many old objects. Another speaker, a plainclothes policeman, comes out of the fray after taking the assailant's knife.

That's when several armed police intervene and shoot at Usman Khan. Police said he shot him thinking that he was trying to blow up a bomb that turned out to be a fake explosive vest.

Boris Johnson commits to reviewing early release system

According to the British press, Usman Khan would have been the student of Anjem Choudary, co-founder of a group called Al-Muhajiroun, presented as one of the most dangerous in terms of radicalized Islamism. According to his lawyer, Usman Khan had said since his conviction in 2012 that his approach to Islam was not correct. He allegedly criticized al-Qaeda's philosophy and violent extremism.

The attack was quickly invited into the political debate , while the United Kingdom is in the middle of the electoral campaign for the legislative elections of December 12th. The question was why Usman Khan had benefited from early release and what supervision he was receiving from the authorities. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged to review the early release system, ensuring that cases of other early-release terrorists were reviewed. " A lot of work is being done right now to make sure the public is protected, " he promised.

The British police renewed Saturday its call to witnesses. A house in Stafford, a town in the center of England where Usman Khan was said to have resided, was raided. One of the tasks of the British investigators will now be to determine the circumstances of this attack while he was on probation.
