The Grums Municipal Board has previously decided to close Skruvstad's school, a village school with 34 pupils, as part of a kick-off requirement. But parents of students at the school are upset and want to start a free school.

Can wait with the school closure

On Thursday, the council decided that Skruvstad school should be closed, but made an addition that gives the parent group time to submit an application for a free school to the National Agency for Education before 31 January 2020. If the application comes in, the municipality will not close Skruvstad after the spring term 2020, but waiting until December 31, 2020. Then the free school can begin and start its operations on January 1, 2021.

- It was a unanimous council that made the decision. This means that we were responsive and adapted to their situation, ”says Leif Haraldsson (S), municipal council in Grums.

"30 applications already"

Camilla Nilsson is a parent of children at the school and involved in the elementary school group. According to her, there is an interest among parents in running Skruvstad as a free school.

- Yesterday we had 30 applications to a free school, some kids know I will belong to middle school. We have a lot of work to do but it is good that we get respite, it increases our chances. It's short on time.

- We want to give them the same opportunity that the parents got at the free school in Värmskog and in Borgvik, it is important to treat everyone equally, says Leif Haralsson (S).
