Germany's Ursula von der Leyen becomes the new president of the European Commission.

The new European Commission won Wednesday, November 27, the confirmation vote of the European Parliament and will be invested Sunday, December 1.

MEPs approved the new EU executive by 461 votes to 157. There were 89 abstentions. A simple majority was sufficient for the von der Leyen Commission to be confirmed.

The 61-year-old former German Defense Minister and Angela Merkel is the first woman elected to the presidency of the European Commission.

Ursula von der Leyen has been appointed by European Heads of State and Government to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker as President of the European Commission for the next five years.
