A massive 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Albania in the early hours of Tuesday, November 26, leaving at least six people dead and 150 wounded light, according to an initial assessment.

An Albanian seismologist, Rrapo Ormeni, told local television that it was the most powerful earthquake in the Durrës region since 1926.

The earthquake was felt at 2:54 local time (1:54 GMT) and sparked panic in Tirana. The epicenter of this quake was in the Adriatic Sea, 34 km northwest of Tirana, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The authorities have mobilized about 300 soldiers to take part in relief operations in Durres and Thumane where, according to the Albanian Ministry of Defense, "there are people trapped under the ruins".

According to the Ministry of Defense, a man in his fifties killed himself by panicking from his building in Kurbin. The bodies of a man and a woman were removed from the rubble of buildings in Thumane, north of the capital Tirana. The bodies of three other people, including a girl, were taken from the ruins of collapsed buildings in Durres. And at least 150 slightly injured people showed up at the hospital in Tirana and Durres, according to Albanian Health Minister Ogerta Manasterliu.
