If a Danish citizen has joined the terrorist organization IS in Syria and has had a child there, the child should not be able to become a Danish citizen, says Danish Radio.

"It was born of parents who turned Denmark's back and therefore should not be part of Denmark," said Foreign and Integration Minister Inger Støjberg (Venstre).

The government has signed the agreement with their support party, the Danish People's Party, which is the country's second largest party.

But the agreement also means that Denmark tightens the law for all Danes who have joined the terrorist group IS. It will be much easier to take away their Danish citizenship.

No court decision

This can be done without a court decision through a simpler administrative procedure while staying in, for example, Syria or Iraq.

But the measure applies only to those who have dual citizenship, reports Danmarks Radio.

The settlement is important, says the Danish People's Party's Christian Langballe.

- We don't want them home again. We never want them home again, he tells Danish Radio.

"Individual rights"

The rescue organization Save the Children in Sweden reacts strongly to the new law, which may start to apply in Denmark this summer.

- It goes against all reasonable logic. We have a strong tradition in the Nordic countries that is strong. We talk about children having individual rights in relation to the state. It is not rights that come with parents' behavior. says Ola Mattson, Sweden's Head of Save the Children to SVT News.
