Guinea-Bissau is awaiting the results of the presidential Sunday, November 24. ECOWAS delivered its conclusions and the assessment is satisfactory.
" This election was peaceful and friendly, " said Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga , the former Malian prime minister who led the 75-member observation mission. According to him, no major incident is to be deplored. In the offices visited, some delays, some problems of indelible ink or some shortcomings were noted, but are not likely to taint the process, according to the ECOWAS.
The organization recalled all the obstacles overcome to organize this election. The latter has invested heavily with summits , threats of sanctions in early November and with the presence of its Ecomib armed force in the country since 2012.
General Francis Behanzin, Commissioner for Political, Peace and Security Affairs of ECOWAS, welcomed the republican posture of the defense and security forces who have not intervened in political affairs. But he warned, if there are uncontrolled elements, then " we will intervene as we intervened elsewhere ", recalling the military intervention in The Gambia end of 2016.
Regarding the accusations of fraud made by the camp of incumbent President José Mario Vaz , the head of the observation mission encourages actors who have challenges to resort to the legal route.
