In a conversation with Der Tagesspiegel, the diplomat noted that such a decision would "balance the politics" of US President Donald Trump regarding Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank.

Earlier, State Department head Mike Pompeo said that the administration of US President Donald Trump is reviewing the US position on the legitimacy of Israeli settlements in Palestine and no longer considers them to be contrary to international law.

In September, the Israeli government approved the construction of a settlement in the Jordan Valley as part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s intention to extend Israeli sovereignty to parts of the West Bank.
