UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan has confirmed that the 40th session of the Gulf summit will be held in Saudi Arabia instead of the UAE next month.

The UAE minister's statement came in response to a question by Al Jazeera correspondent in Washington after meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Bahrain's Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa told the official news agency on Saturday that Saudi Arabia would host the upcoming Gulf summit.

"We expect Saudi Arabia to announce in the coming days the date of the GCC summit, which is a good step," Al Khalifa said.

The Bahraini minister added that the region is capable of solving its own problems, noting the role led by Kuwait in solving the Gulf crisis.

It will be the first time a Gulf summit has been held in Saudi Arabia for the second year in a row since the GCC was founded.
