Pia Fredriksson in Västra Frölunda planted garden shades this spring. She was very surprised when she discovered several ripe berries a week.

- We think it's really weird. And in addition, the description stated that there would be no raspberries the first year. It has not been so cold, but you think it needs some sun too, says Pia Fredriksson.

- I think it's great fun. We checked a little now and then and all of a sudden it was full of red raspberries. A surprise indeed, she says.

A mild autumn

The variety Pia has planted is called Elektra and is autumn raspberry.

- Summer raspberries bloom and get berries during the summer on last year's shoots. Autumn raspberries get their berries on the annual shoots. They normally produce ways in September, but as long as there is not a proper frost, it can continue to bear, says Mats Havström, scientific curator at the Botanical Garden in Gothenburg.

He explains that it may be because the autumn has been quite mild.

- We have had a mild autumn. Many plants are struggling even if there have not been so many degrees or sun, for example, there are many roses that still have blooms. But of course it is quite late to be Sweden. But on the coast it is quite normal for it is warmer here and especially when near the sea, as in Frölunda, says Mats Havström.
