At least 24 people, including seven children, have been killed by landslides caused by unusual heavy rain in northwest Kenya.
The rains began to rain yesterday in West Bukot district on the border with Uganda, and intensified overnight, resulting in floods and mudslides that destroyed four bridges and cut off the road leading to the village of Moino, which is most affected by the rain.
"More people have been stranded and the whole village is in danger of being swept away by floods," provincial governor John Luniangabu told Reuters by telephone as he waited for a helicopter to take him to check the blood.
Rescue efforts were underway in the area and more than 500 vehicles were stranded by damage to several roads, he said, adding that 11 of the dead were inside one house.
Aid groups said earlier this month that heavy rains and floods had killed more than 50 people and forced hundreds of thousands to flee across East Africa.
