Pope Francis will visit Urakami district in Nagasaki city where the atomic bomb was dropped 74 years ago. Why do you visit this place?
At 11:02 am on August 9, 1945 (Showa 20), the atomic bomb dropped by an American army bomb exploded in the Urakami area of Nagasaki City.
The area is home to many Catholic believers who have persecuted and preserved their faith while being persecuted, and more than half of them are said to have died from the A-bomb.
At the hypocenter, there is a 6.6-meter-high monument "A-bomb fall center monument". A Catholic church destroyed by the atomic bomb and a part of the Urakami Cathedral wall have been moved for reconstruction.
Pope Francisco invites A-bomb survivors and nearby elementary, junior high and high school students to give a message for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
