During the national days of the weekend, the Swedish Democrats will change course on several issues where they differed from the other parties, the issue of abortion, the view of citizenship and the opportunity for single and gay people to adopt children are some examples.

- It was difficult to have a dialogue with young women in the electoral movement on the issue of abortion. I think that we will be able to talk to them in a different way now, ”says Linda Hefvelin, member of SD for Strängnäs.

Changed to dual citizenship

At the end of the election movement last year, the party was hard pressed by its opponents on the issue of abortion and on the issue of citizenship. Opponents described the Swedish Democrats as hostile to women and made it clear to potential immigrant voters that the Swedish Democrats did not accept dual citizenship. Now the party has changed on both points.

- There are probably many people who live with dual citizenship and who may have hesitated to vote for us for that reason. I think this can help us in this matter, says Anton Berglund, chairman of the Swedish Democrats in Sörmland.

Selected the right course

The change is about who can become a citizen or not. A question that could create debate in a nationalist party that changes course on such a question. But it is difficult to see any open opposition. At the meeting in Sörmland, there was great agreement that the party management had chosen the right course.

- We usually joke and say that something we must be critical of the party board for, but I have not found anything, says Kim Fredriksson Swedish Democrats group leader in Eskilstuna.

Isn't there a risk that you will be annihilated?

- Not at all, on the contrary, it is good that we listen to others and the party board has done a good basic job and it is good, says Björn Karlsson from Strängnäs.
