The second most common cause of long-term absenteeism, following mental diagnoses, is spinal and joint diseases as well as diseases of soft tissues, according to a report from Afa insurance. The report is based on cases with more than 90 days sick leave or monthly allowance starting in 2017 and 2018.

Sörmland has the highest share

In total, 29 per cent of long-term illnesses in Sweden are due to back and joint diseases, and 31 per cent of sick landers who have more than 90 days of sick leave or compensation are due to these diseases.

- One reason may be that the seamstresses have a low level of education and relatively high mental health. Both cause diseases in the organs of movement, says Maria Vejdal, Head of Unit for Health Promotion in Region Sörmland.
