New Zealander Dave Rennie has been named Wallabies coach since July 2020, the Australian Federation said in a statement on Tuesday.

Rennie, who has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal, will only replace Michael Cheika next summer, on the heels of his commitments with the Glasgow Warriors club.

"It's a huge blow, Dave Rennie was the ideal candidate for this job," said Australian Federation boss Raelene Castle.

"Dave's philosophy focuses as much on rugby as on team culture, essential pillars for building sustainable success," she added.

The 55-year-old technician guided the Chiefs' franchise to two Super 15 (2012 and 2013) successes before joining the Warriors, which he led in the Pro14 (Celtic league) final.

Pending the arrival of Rennie, Australian rugby director Scott Johnson will take over.

"Dave and Scott worked closely together during their stay in Scotland (...) With Dave as head coach and Scott managing our off-field program, the Wallabies have the right structure in place to build a new era of lasting success, "Castle assured.

Rennie succeeds Cheika, who left after a disappointing World Cup-2019, finished in the quarter-finals against England (40-16), a finalist.
