A man can lie dead in an apartment for three years with the radio still on, before being found by police. Society has a responsibility to counter such loneliness, but we as individuals, too, emphasize Anna Löfdahl, head of social policy at PRO.

- We have a responsibility as fellow human beings to keep a close eye on the neighbors and investigate how people in our neighborhood are feeling, she tells SVT News.

"A smile can go a long way"

There does not have to be anything big or difficult to see and confirm people in our vicinity, Anna Löfdahl points out. It's about being open to meetings and generous with curiosity and thoughtfulness.

- It can be on the bus, in the stairs or in the queue at the grocery store and it doesn't have to be very complicated. A smile or some kind words can go a long way.

Poor finances can contribute to loneliness

The loneliness of the elderly can have many causes. Economy and mental health are two factors that contribute.

- For example, many retirees have been poorly financially, which makes it difficult to keep up with activities or buy clothes for a party. They may not have the financial opportunity to go to the cinema or have a coffee. Mental ill health can also cause you to withdraw.

But loneliness itself can make you sick, according to Löfdahl. Many older people lose their connection when they stop working or when they lose partners and friends who leave.

- It can contribute to depression and reduced appetite which can also lead to physical conditions. Loneliness affects your entire life situation, says Anna Löfdahl.
