The treatment home Narconon, with links to the Scientology movement, has received harsh criticism from the National Board of Health's medical expert, who said that the treatment is not scientifically based and therefore should not be allowed in Sweden. Nevertheless, Swedish municipalities have continued to place people with drug problems at home.
Tom Palmstierna, chief physician of dependency center Stockholm, thinks the treatment is distressing.
- If the essence of the treatment is sauna bathing and obedience exercises, it has no effect whatsoever on addiction, he says.
