Football legend Diego Maradona resigned Tuesday from his coaching position after only two and a half months at Gimnasia La Plata, confirmed the Argentine club to AFP.

"Maradona is no longer the coach of Gimnasia," had earlier assured the president of the club Gabriel Pellegrino on radio La Red.

The 59-year-old Argentinean had, according to the local press, linked his future to Pellegrino, who will not run for the elections scheduled for 23 November.

The old N.10 had returned to Argentina in September, promising to "do everything" to save Gimnasia relegation to the second division.

Under the command of the whimsical "Pibe de Oro", the club of La Plata has won only three of its last eight games and points to 22nd place (out of 24) in the ranking of the championship of Argentina after thirteen days.

His return, 24 years after his last coaching job in the country (Racing Club), had rocked Argentine football, rekindling passions.

From Mexico (Dorados de Sinaloa) to the United Arab Emirates (Al Wasl, Al-Fujairah) to Argentina (Deportivo Mandiyu, Racing Club), the 1986 world champion has led six clubs and the Argentinean selection (2008- 2010).
