• The US recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announces the change of the headquarters of the US embassy
  • Israel.'Altos de Trump 'already has his badge in the Golan

The Government of the United States has ended today its legal position that Israeli settlements in occupied territory in the West Bank violate international law, a position that the country had maintained for four decades and whose purpose promises to further hinder peace efforts in the region. "The establishment of Israeli settlements in the West Bank is not incompatible with international law," said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at a press conference, Efe reports.

The Executive will no longer abide by the legal opinion of the State Department of 1978 that the settlements were "inconsistent with international law," according to the official quoted by Reuters before the announcement by the secretary of state. The measure is likely to be well received by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and that it will annoy the Palestinians as well as other countries that seek to resolve the Middle East conflict.

The expected announcement is the third major instance in which the Trump administration has sided with Israel and against the positions taken by the Palestinians and the Arab states.

In 2017, Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and, in 2018, the United States officially opened an embassy in the city. US policy had previously been that the Jerusalem statute should be decided by the parties to the conflict.

In addition, in March this year, Donald Trump acknowledged the annexation in 1981 of the Golan Heights by Israel, in an impulse to strengthen Netanyahu's position. This action provoked a strong response from Syria, which once managed this strategic territory.

The current Donald Trump movement could have been designed to help Netanyahu in his struggle to stay in power. Israeli policy is stalled after two inconclusive elections this year. The Blue and White centrist party of former military chief Benny Gantz and the Likud of Netanyahu have fought, after the September elections, to form a ruling coalition.
