Ever since 1978, the United States has officially seen the Israeli settlements on the West Bank as violations of international law. But not anymore.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made the announcement at a press conference during Monday night, Swedish Time.

"After carefully studying all aspects of the legal debate, our government has agreed that the establishment of Israeli, civilian settlements on the West Bank is not incompatible with international law," Pompeo said.

Acclaimed by Netanyahu

The message is welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

- This fixes a historical error, he says on Monday night.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat says the Trump administration's decision is "irresponsible American behavior," according to TT. A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas says the decision is contrary to international law.

Americans are warned

This is the third time that the Trump administration is now asking Israel on sensitive issues for the region.

In 2017, they recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In 2018, the US embassy was moved to the city. and now comes the decision on the settlements.

Shortly after Pompeo's message, the US embassy in Jerusalem went out and warned Americans not to move in the country for fear of violent reactions to the decision.
