John Bel Edwards was, in recent years, the only Democratic governor in a state in the southern United States. And this Saturday, November 16, he was re-elected just for a second term at the head of Louisiana. His victory is a scathing snub for Donald Trump. The president had indeed thrown all his weight in the balance in order to elect the republican candidate.

Louisiana is what the Americans call a " dark red state "; that is to say, a very conservative state that votes in the presidential elections for Republican candidates. Donald Trump won Louisiana in 2016 with more than twenty points ahead of Hillary Clinton.

Millions of dollars...

A victory he would have liked to confirm this weekend in the election of the governor. To support the Republican candidate, Eddie Rispone, the Conservative Party had invested millions of dollars. The president had traveled to Louisiana many times to support him, not hesitating to make the election of this businessman without political experience a referendum for or against Donald Trump .

Electoral slap

" You have to win me, " he even said last week at an election rally, completely eclipsing regional issues in the poll. The victory of the outgoing Democratic governor, John Bel Edwards, with only 40,000 votes in advance, therefore looks like a personal failure for the president. An electoral slap all the more painful at the beginning of the month, the Republicans have already lost the position of the governor in another state of the South, Kentucky.
